Special Needs Policy

Rationale

In MWMAC we believe that every trainee should have the best possible learning opportunities and we therefore promote inclusive practice. We recognise that some trainees may have particular needs or disabilities and we take specific action to support and encourage these trainees within a caring environment.

We enable all trainees to participate fully in learning activities and experiences by providing a training course that responds to the individual development of each trainee.

Implementation of the policy in MWMAC

It is the responsibility of Directors to:

  • produce a Special Needs Policy for MWMAC and make it available to all Trainees..

  • ensure that all staff, including Instructors and Assessors, are aware of the details of the policy.

  • be aware of ‘special needs' and ‘disabilities' in the context of training and education, and understand how statutory, national and local procedures apply in practice to trainees.

  • ensure that the work of MWMAC has ‘due regard' to the DfEE Code of Practice 2001.

  • identify the necessary provision and staff arrangements to meet the special needs of the trainees.

  • Special needs provision to be an agenda item on all management meetings:

  • ensure that no trainee with special needs is refused a place at MWMAC, unless it is in the interest of their own safety and the safety of others

  • Set high, but achievable, targets for trainees with special needs.

  • liaise with organisations and agencies who are concerned with the trainees special needs and disabilities.

  • ensure that staff have opportunities to undertake specialist training related to special needs, to improve and update their knowledge and understanding.

We make reasonable adaptations and arrangements to the training environment, so that trainees with special needs and disabilities can join in all training activities, both indoors and outdoors.

  • We make every effort to organise appropriate space for the trainees supported and independent movement.

  • We ensure that trainees with special needs have easy access to toilet and eating facilities.

  • We arrange respectful privacy for trainees with special needs at times of specific medical care or welfare.
